Digital Products & Leadership for News, Media, Education, and Publishing.

    Hi. Thanks for visiting christophertine.com.

Here you will find some information about me and the work I've done in News, Media, Education, and Publishing. I've also included videos and links to projects that I've worked on, and some information about how to get in touch with me.

I hope you enjoy browsing, and I look forward to hearing from you.

By the way that's me above, at the Reel Inn in Malibu. If you haven't been there, I recommend the fish tacos.

  • About Me.

    broken image

I am a seasoned digital product leader who's been working at the intersection of news, media, education, and publishing for over a decade.

I have experience in both major media companies and smaller boutique firms, and I've built and led digital product teams; produced everything from digital content to prime-time TV shows; and started a digital film company. The common thread throughout has been a laser-focus on the consumer - be it customer, viewer, or end user - and creating great experiences, products and content that will truly surprise and delight them.

Currently I am Chief Product Officer at Richardson Sales Performance, where my team is re-imagining what Sales Training can be, and how we can deliver amazing educational experiences to adult learners. Before this role I was Vice President of Product for two innovative training and content companies - ESI International and IPS Learning, which we brought together to form TwentyEighty Strategy Execution. At TwentyEighty I led the Product Development, Global Learning, Content, and Delivery teams, and worked closely with the CEO and my peers on the Executive Team to revitalize the company's product and digital strategies.

Prior to TwentyEighty, I was Head of Product Solutions at Macmillan Science & Education, one of the world's premiere publishing and education companies, where I managed a great group of Product Owners, Solution Architects, UX and Visual Designers.

From 2007 to 2013, I worked at NBC News. I started at NBC as a digital content producer, and wound up holding senior roles in four new digital businesses, including a leading role getting NBC's education division off the ground. I also led a number of other digital and mobile projects for the News, Sports, and Olympics groups.

And before all of this work in digital products I spent 4 years in TV production including roles at the BBC and for PBS. I also got together with some friends and co-founded a collaborative digital filmmaking event in New York and Los Angeles called the RIPFEST Collaborative Film Project. It's been such a rewarding project - we've worked with over 1000 filmmakers and I have Executive Produced over 100 short films and documentaries since 2002.

I love that my career path has been a winding one, and I'm really proud that along the way my teams and I have been honored with an Emmy Award, a Webby, a number of Telly's, and something called a "Rube." In case you're interested in the education side of things, I also hold a B.A. in Rhetoric from Bates College; an M.Phil. in the History and Philosophy of Architecture from Cambridge University; and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.

    Richardson Accelerate

I could not be prouder of the work that my team at Richardson is doing to bring the mobile-first Richardson Accelerate platform to market.

Accelerate delivers a best-in-class active learning experience, world-class video-based modules, on-demand content, games, peer collaboration, real-time data, and a library of programs in sales, leadership, negotiations, emotional intelligence and more.

This product is truly reshaping its space, and changing the fortunes of a great 40-year old training company.

    Macmillan LaunchPad

At Macmillan Education we completely rethought how publishing and education companies could deliver truly amazing content to students and instructors - anytime, anywhere.

I led the Product Solutions Group at Macmillan Education - a great group of Product Owners, Solution Architects, UX and Visual Designers who continue to develop, innovate, and improve the platform for Higher Education users. The video above shows a before-and-after view of our product redesign - check it out!

    Education Nation

Education Nation was a huge, multi-platform undertaking by NBC News to shine a national spotlight on education issues.  I was tapped to co-create EducationNation.com, and I was Head of Digital for three years.

My team and I built web and mobile sites, we held broadcast quality live-streamed events around the country, created interactive tools and infographics, commissioned cutting-edge interactive journalism, and used sophisticated social media campaigns to cultivate an amazing community of people who care about education.

     NBC Learn

I was fortunate to be part of the education arm of NBC News from the beginning.  NBC Learn (K-12 and Higher Ed) is a great digital product that makes archival film, current events, and award-winning original video available to students and teachers around the world.

As a member of the senior management team, I led product development, launched a major divisional rebranding, and built the customer support and implementation team.

    The Royal Wedding App

In 2011, I took a special assignment at NBC News: build a mobile-first, interactive second-screen experience for the Royal Wedding for online users and for our on-air talent to use.

We built a set of interactive apps for iOS and Android that were packed with beautiful video and photo content, had a full social media integration, and tied into the live NBC broadcasts. The project was written up in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and was featured on the TODAY show, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC.

    What's Your iCue?

This was a project that two friends and I pitched to NBC News as a way to gamify great news content and engage with a younger audience.

What's Your iCue? was the first video trivia game in Facebook.  The app quickly had tens of thousands of players - both individuals and in self-formed trivia teams - and was great at driving video views and sponsorship revenue.

I led Product, Strategy, and Partnerships for the project, and I also got featured in this cool book on gamification and marketing!

    iCue.com

iCue = Immerse, Connect, Understand, Excel.

iCue.com was a free gaming, video, and social media platform for students that was built for collaborative learning and AP test prep. The product was developed collaboratively with kids, teachers, and a team of researchers at MIT.

I joined the project as a digital content producer and wound up on the product team - rethinking the entire content management strategy, redesigning the collaboration and video features, and building many of the interactive games on the platform.

    Science of the Olympics

This ground-breaking series was a team effort between NBC Learn, NBC Olympics, and the National Science Foundation, and earned us NBC News's first digital Emmy award!

Using super high-speed cameras, the NBC team went behind the scenes with the US Olympic Team before the 2010 Vancouver Games to see how they use science and engineering to give U.S. athletes an advantage as they compete on the world stage.

    Solutions in Action

I created and produced this web series in order to shine a spotlight on what's working in American schools.

Together with my friend (and NBC News Chief Education Corespondent) Rehema Ellis and our partners at Blackboard we set out to see who was doing really innovative work, and shared their stories through extended interviews.

    Film / RIPFEST

In 2002, I co-founded RIPFEST, a collaborative filmmaking event where we assemble teams of professional filmmakers and support them as they write, produce, shoot, and edit totally original digital short films in just 16 days.

In 12 years, we've worked with over 1000 filmmakers and actors, and I have Executive Produced over 90 films, and 12 documentaries.

    Television

I worked for four years as a television producer in New York City for some of the best production companies in the business including the BBC, Lion Television, and CameraPlanet.

My work in non-fiction television has ranged from documentaries to game shows, and includes series like "History Detectives," "What Not to Wear," and "Travel Spies," which have aired on PBS, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, and TLC.

Christopher Tine leading a session at SXSWedu 2014

    Speaking & Conference Panels

I really enjoy speaking to groups and on panels about technology, learning, business and Agile.

Recently I have been presenting on the Future of Learning - specifically, how the latest advances in technology, cognitive science, and design thinking should inform our thinking about what makes for a truly effective learning journey. Audiences aboard the Intrepid in New York, at the Institute of Directors in London, and at the Sales 2.0 Conference in San Francisco have been great to speak with, and have provided fantastic feedback.

I am also particularly passionate about enterprise Agility, and the power of Agile principles to improve the way we work both as individuals and as teams.

The photo above is from a session at SXSWedu with my friend and colleague Basil Kolani. I also had a great time recently speaking on the Association of American Publishers panel called "How New Technology Can Increase Student Success."

I have also moderated panels including "Publishing: The Shift from Print to Digital" at The Grolier Club in New York and participated in the "Channeling Integrated Media" panel at the Atlanta TV Fest.
